I grew up in a small village in Cornwall, southwest England. My passion for photography grew out of a love of art and design , and the influence of my father and his father, both avid photographers. After studying a foundation course in art and design at the Falmouth College of Art and Design, and obtaining degree in Theatre Design from Central Saint Martins in London, I found myself following my heart (my wife, Kate) to the home of Kentucky Fried Chicken, bourbon, and a little known horse race that happens in May--Louisville Kentucky. For the last seven years, I have been the Technology Assistant at a local, all-girl, Catholic High School, and last year also began working as the Children’s and Youth Coordinator at my church. My photography has allowed me to fill my spare time with something I love doing, as well as incorporate it into my “day jobs”. In addition, I have just become a first-time father, and have found an excellent muse in my daughter, Isabel.
I was given my first “real” camera for my 18th birthday (a Pentax P30T,) replacing many point-and-shoots and a borrowed camera of my father’s (Fujica ST605). My view through a camera lens has always been one that focuses on the drama and simplicity of art and design. Much of my work has showcased sweeping panoramic urban and rural scenes, as well as the detailed macro photography of plant life.
In 2007, I travelled with a group from my church to Guatemala where I took over 4,000 photos in nine days. Most people call me obsessive. It was in that place of lakes, waterfalls, villages, and volcanoes that I discovered a new love in photographing people. I find that images of people share such a story. I am now working to convert my garage into a portrait studio.
I had a further catalyst in developing my portrait photography when the school I work for suggested that instead of outsourcing our official photography, I could handle the photography in house. They kindly assisted by purchasing a variety of equipment including strobes, flashes, and backdrops. As for cameras, currently I am using a Nikon D80 and a Fuji S9100. I also enjoy doing my own studio DIY projects for items such as light stands and soft boxes. To aid in my photography workflow, I use Adobe Lightroom 3. |
